About Daniel Andrews

The Short Version

I’m a Senior Technology Leader with over twenty-five years of experience designing and delivering scalable IT infrastructure for experience-driven organisations. I specialise in translating complex operational needs into practical technology strategy, and in making sure teams actually adopt the systems I build. For the past two years my work has been largely in applied AI.

Currently based in Wakayama, Japan, I work with organisations across Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, as well as English-speaking individuals in Japan who need technology assistance.

The Longer Version

My Philosophy

The best infrastructure is invisible: reliable, secure, and so well-aligned with people’s needs that it simply enables them to do their best work. I’ve spent twenty-five years proving this across arts, culture, non-profit, enterprise, and startup sectors.

What I Value

  • Human-centred technology: Systems should serve people, not the other way around
  • Security as foundation: Stability and protection enable confidence and innovation
  • Clear communication: Technical concepts should be accessible to all stakeholders
  • Diversity and inclusion: I actively seek to work with organisations that share these values
  • Accessibility by design: Building systems that work for everyone, regardless of ability or context
  • Remote-first flexibility: I’ve led technology operations remotely for nine years, including hardware rollouts and a disaster recovery run from another country

Background

  • Education: Bachelor of Visual Arts, Sydney College of the Arts (University of Sydney) - Electronic & Temporal Arts, Sculpture, Performance, Installation
  • Multimedia Experience: Creation and development of websites, digital publishing systems, computer systems and networks; multimedia production for Internet and recorded media and live performance
  • Career Span: Working as a technologist since 1997
  • Client Range: Experience with national broadcasters and international NGOs as well as individuals and small businesses
  • Certifications: First Aid (CPR & Basic Emergency Life Support), Licensed Driver (up to 4.5t GVM)
  • Languages: English (native), Japanese (beginner/intermediate, actively improving)
  • Work Rights: Australian citizen; full, unrestricted work rights in Japan (spouse visa)

Outside of Work

I’m married, safety-conscious, and open-minded. I enjoy connecting with progressive and unconventional people across cultures and industries. My personal commitment to accessibility and inclusive design informs my professional approach to technology. I have a deep interest in the arts, philosophy and science and have worked in these topic areas as a technologist and communicator. I also have interests in music, community, politics, and environmental concerns.
